Teeth are an essential part of the human body, responsible for chewing and biting food, smiling and even speaking. Kids need to take good care of their teeth to keep them healthy and strong. Here are some exciting teeth facts that kids might find interesting:
1. You don’t just have two sets of teeth.
People have two sets of teeth in their lifetimes – baby teeth and permanent (adult) teeth. However, did you know that some animals, like sharks and crocodiles, can have hundreds of sets of teeth?
2. Teeth start to form before you’re born.
Teeth begin to form inside a baby’s gums before they are even born. By the time they are six months old, their first baby teeth (also known as milk teeth) are starting to come through.
3. Some animals use their teeth for defense.
While humans use their teeth primarily for eating and talking, some animals use their teeth for defense. For example, porcupines use their sharp teeth to scare off predators, and narwhals use their long, spiral tusks to fight each other.
4. Sugary food and drinks can damage your teeth.
Most kids love to eat sugary snacks and drinks, but too much sugar can harm your teeth. Sugar combines with bacteria in your mouth to create acid that makes holes in your teeth. That’s why it’s essential to brush your teeth twice a day and visit the dentist every six months.
5. Your teeth are unique.
Just like fingerprints, every person’s teeth are different. Dentists can identify people based on their dental records, thanks to the different patterns of their teeth.
6. Losing baby teeth is normal.
When kids reach six or seven years old, they start to lose their baby teeth. This process is entirely normal and allows the permanent teeth to come through. The Tooth Fairy is a fun way to celebrate this milestone!
7. Some animals never stop growing teeth.
Rabbits, rodents, beavers, and some other animals continually grow their teeth throughout their lifetimes. This is because their teeth wear down quickly due to the tough materials they eat.
