Allosaurus was a dinosaur that lived during the late Jurassic period around 155 to 145 million years ago. It was a ferocious and notorious predator that dominated the ecosystem, and it’s one of the most famous dinosaurs that ever lived. Here are some interesting facts about Allosaurus for kids.
1. Size and Appearance
Allosaurus was a large dinosaur that could grow up to 39 feet (12 meters) long and weighed around 2-4 tons. It was a bipedal dinosaur, which means that it walked on two powerful legs. Allosaurus had a large head, with a narrow snout full of sharp, serrated teeth that it used to catch and eat its prey. It also had powerful jaws and muscular neck that allowed it to take down larger animals.
2. Habitat
Allosaurus was found in North America, Europe, and Africa. These continents were connected at the time, forming a single landmass called Pangaea. Allosaurus lived in a variety of habitats, including forests, plains, and wetlands. It was also seen in mountainous regions where it could easily hunt prey from a higher elevation.
3. Diet
Allosaurus was a carnivore, which means that it only ate meat. It mainly fed on large herbivorous dinosaurs such as Diplodocus and Stegosaurus. Allosaurus would ambush its prey, using its powerful jaws and sharp teeth to kill the animal either by biting its neck or crushing its skull.
4. Social Behavior
Allosaurus was a solitary animal. However, juvenile Allosaurus was believed to hunt in groups, which made it possible to take down larger prey. It’s also possible that adult pairs may have worked together to hunt and protect their young.
5. Extinction
Allosaurus became extinct around the end of the Jurassic period about 145 million years ago. It’s believed that the cause of its extinction was due to changes in climate and the evolution of new predators that outcompeted Allosaurus.
