Quadrilaterals are four-sided polygons that are classified based on their properties. As a teacher, it is important to make sure that your students are able to effectively classify quadrilaterals. Teaching the concept of quadrilaterals can prove challenging to some students, but with the right activities, it can become easy and fun. Here are some activities that you can use to teach students how to classify quadrilaterals:
1. Sorting quads:
This is a simple activity that requires organizing a deck of cards that each displays an image of a quadrilateral. The students will have to sort them into different groups based on the quadrilateral’s properties. The teacher can provide a checklist that contains the properties of each quadrilateral group. For instance, students can sort the quadrilaterals based on whether they have parallel sides, equal angles or diagonals.
2. I Spy with Quadrilaterals:
This activity requires students to locate quadrilaterals within the school or classroom. The teacher should provide cards that contain images of different quadrilaterals. Students will then have to locate those specific quadrilaterals within the school or classroom. Students are supposed to say out loud when they find a specific quadrilateral, and then report its characteristics.
3. Quadrilateral Pictures:
Drawings: This activity is geared towards students who are just acquiring beginner level concepts about quadrilaterals. The teacher can provide students with a drawing that they are to label with the properties of three types of quadrilaterals. For example, students can draw a kite, a square and a parallelogram. They should then label each quadrilateral with attributes like angles, sides or diagonals.
4. Quadrilateral Bingo:
You can create a bingo game with quadrilaterals that will require students to match different properties of quadrilaterals to specific attributes. The teacher should draw out a quadrilateral bingo card that contains different attributes like: “Has four equal sides” or “Has opposite angles equal to each other.” Students can use their own quads cards to fill in the boxes with the attributes.
5. Puzzle Mania:
This activity involves students working in pairs or individually to solve a puzzle that contains different quadrilaterals. Students will have to identify the type of quadrilateral each piece belongs to using the pre-drawn diagrams on their puzzle printouts. Once students have correctly sorted the parts, the puzzle will have a perfect quadrilateral shape.
These five activities to teach students how to classify quadrilaterals are both fun and educational. The students will not only develop their reasoning and logical skills but will also learn valuable life skills such as communication and problem-solving. Teachers and parents can use these activities while teaching children at home or in schools to effectively classify quadrilaterals. With these activities, your child’s development in geometry will be off to a great start.
